Lunch Briefing on Violence and Abuse: How Public Health Can Help Prevent and Respond

“Violence and Abuse: How Public Health Can Help Prevent and Respond”

on Thursday, April 7, 2011 from  

12:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M.

in U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, Room House 201.

During National Public Health Week 2011, the focus will be on injury prevention.   The National Health Collaborative on Violence and Abuse (NHCVA) a collaborative of national professional health associations concerned with the health impact of violence and abuse will be taking this opportunity to focus attention on the importance of violence to the national public health and prevention discussion.    Unfortunately, approximately one out of three women has a lifetime exposure to violence and abuse.   The violence and the negative health consequences that are associated with this issue will not end until we also address children exposed to violence.   In the past year, 15.5 million U.S. children lived in families in which partner violence occurred at least once, and seven million children lived in families in which severe partner violence occurred.

NHCVA, which includes leaders from the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Nurses Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics, will host a panel of speakers who will discuss health impact of, and the need for prevention, to be integrated into the national public health agenda and promising initiatives that leaders are implementing to address this issue at the state level.
